Supported Independent Living (SIL) – Your Permanent Home

This is for when you’re ready to move into your own place with the right level of support built in. It’s not a trial. It’s not temporary. It’s your home, with your name on the NDIS plan, and support workers who are there because you need them, not because someone else thinks you should.

What SIL with MyCare CSS actually looks like:

You get your own private bedroom in a shared house (usually 3-4 people). The living areas are shared, which means yes, you’ll have housemates, but we don’t just throw people together and hope for the best. We actually pay attention to whether personalities mesh. If you’re a night owl who watches Netflix till 2am, we’re probably not putting you with someone who’s up at 5am for gym class.

Support is available 24/7, but that doesn’t mean someone’s hovering over you. It means there’s always a support worker in the house if you need help with personal care, medications, cooking, or if something goes wrong. For some people, that’s active support throughout the day. For others, it’s more like having a safety net in the background.

Who this works for:

People who need daily support but want to live as independently as possible. Maybe you’ve been living with family and you’re ready to move out. Maybe you’re in a group home that doesn’t feel like home anymore. Maybe your support needs have changed and your current setup isn’t cutting it.

You’ll need SIL funding in your NDIS plan (it comes under Core Supports). If you’re not sure whether you’ve got it, we can help you check. And if you don’t have it yet but think you need it, we can point you toward the right conversations to have with your planner.

Short Term Accommodation (STA/Respite) – Up to 14 Nights Per Year

This is the “I just need a break” option. Or the “my carer’s in hospital and I need somewhere to stay right now” option. Or the “I want to see what supported living feels like before I commit to moving out of home” option.

STA isn’t about long-term plans. It’s about right now.

  1. Planned Respite
You know you need a break, maybe your carer is going on holiday, or you just want some space, or you’re testing out what living independently might feel like. You book ahead (usually 2-4 weeks notice), pick your dates, and we sort out the rest. All meals included. All support included. You bring your clothes and meds, we handle everything else.
  2. Emergency Respite
Something’s happened, family emergency, carer illness, housing crisis, relationship breakdown. You need accommodation today or tomorrow, not in three weeks. Call us. If we’ve got a bed, we’ll make it work. We aim for placement within 24-48 hours for genuine emergencies.

What’s included during your stay:

  • Private bedroom (yes, even for short stays)
  • Three meals a day plus snacks
  • 24/7 support, personal care, medications, whatever you need
  • Activities if you want them (we’re not going to force you to do craft if you’d rather just chill)
  • Transport to appointments or activities (if it’s in your plan)
  • A breather for your carer or family

How it’s funded:

STA comes out of your Core Supports under “Assistance with Daily Life.” Most plans allow up to 14 nights per year, but some people get more if their circumstances justify it. If you’re not sure what you’ve got, call us, we can walk you through your plan over the phone.

Anyone with STA funding in their NDIS plan who needs temporary accommodation. Could be a week-long planned break. Could be a long weekend while your carer attends a wedding interstate. Could be two weeks while you’re between permanent housing. Could be an emergency same-day placement because life just threw you a curveball.

If you’re 18+, have an NDIS plan, and need somewhere safe to stay for a bit, this is what STA is for.

What Actually Happens When You Enquire

Step 1: You fill in the form (or call us)
Takes 2 minutes. We ask what you’re looking for, where you want to be, and what your NDIS plan looks like. If it’s an emergency, call instead, forms take too long.

Step 2: We call you back within 24 hours
Usually sooner. We’ll have a proper conversation about what you actually need (not just what ticks boxes on a form). We’ll tell you straight whether we’ve got something suitable or not.

Step 3: If it’s a match, we organize viewings
You come see the property. Meet the housemates if it’s shared SIL. Ask whatever questions you want. We encourage you to bring your support coordinator, a family member, whoever makes you comfortable.

Step 4: You decide if it feels right
No pressure. This is your choice. If it’s not the right fit, we’ll tell you about other providers who might suit better. If it feels good, we’ll coordinate with your NDIS planner to get everything finalized.

Step 5: Move-in support
We help with the transition. Introduce you to support workers. Go over house routines. Make sure you know where everything is. First week is about settling in, not overwhelming you with stuff.

We’re not going to pretend we’re perfect or that we’ve reinvented disability support. But here’s what you actually get with us:

  1. We’re locally rooted
We’re not a national chain running homes in every state. We’re Melbourne-focused, specifically in the west and outer suburbs. Our team lives here. We know the local supports, the transport options, the best GP clinics, the community groups that are actually worth joining.
  2. We still answer our phones
Call during business hours and a real person picks up, usually within three rings. No phone trees, no “press 1 for this, press 2 for that.” Just a person who can help you or connect you to someone who can.
  3. We’ll tell you if we’re not the right fit
If you need something we can’t provide, maybe your support needs are outside our expertise, maybe the locations don’t work, maybe our current vacancies don’t match your situation, we’ll say so. And we’ll point you toward providers who might suit better. We’d rather be honest than waste your time.
  4. Housemate matching actually matters to us
We don’t just fill beds. If you’re quiet and prefer evenings at home, we’re not pairing you with someone who has friends over constantly. If you’ve got a pet, we make sure your housemates are okay with animals. If you’re vegan, we’re not putting you in a house where Sunday means barbecue central. Little things matter.
  5. Our support workers tend to stick around
Low staff turnover means you’re not re-explaining your routine to a new person every month. Our team knows you, remembers your preferences, notices when something’s off. That consistency matters when it’s your home.
  6. We don’t overpromise
Some providers will tell you they can do everything for everyone. We’re more realistic. We’re good at SIL and STA in our regions. We’re experienced with a range of support needs. But we’re not specialists in every single disability or support scenario. If your needs are niche or highly specialized, we’ll let you know whether we’re equipped for it.
