The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) offers three ways to manage NDIS funds: self-managed, plan-managed, and NDIA-managed. In self-management, the participant is responsible for managing their own NDIS funds. In plan management, a provider supports the participant to manage funding in their NDIS plan. In NDIA management, the financial administration of the participant’s plan is managed by the NDIA. Participants can choose a combination of these three options as well
You are eligible if you meet all the following:
- Under 65 years of age when you first apply.
- Are you an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or protected Special Category Visa holder, and live in Australia?
- Have a permanent impairment (physical, intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or psychosocial) that substantially reduces your ability to complete everyday tasks or participate in the community, or you need supports now to minimize future disability.

If you are over 65 and applying for the NDIS for the first time, you are not eligible. The NDIS is only for people who:
Have a permanent disability, and
Apply for the NDIS between the ages of 7 and 65
However, if you became an NDIS participant before turning 65, you will continue to receive support — even after you turn 65.
You don’t have to make any additional payments for NDIS-funded services unless you request extra services beyond what is included in your NDIS plan.
